My Top 5: Bookish Pet Peeves

This weeks top 5 is my bookish pet peeves.

1 – Writing in books

This bothers me more than anything. I understand that people want to make notes on what they are reading, but I hate seeing writing in books! I often make notes myself, but I use post-it notes, or the notes app on my phone, ANYTHING but not the actual book.

2 – When people talk to me while I’m reading

You can see I’m reading, so just don’t bother trying! If you let me know that you want to talk, I can then get to an appropriate stopping point, but don’t just start talking to me while I’m reading, because I won’t be listening, and you will probably make me read the same line over and over again.

3 – Cracking the spine

Cracked spines really irritate me. All of my books look unread (apart from some of my secondhand ones) because I don’t crack the spine, and that’s exactly how I like it to look. The secondhand books which have had the spines cracked don’t seem to sit right on my shelves, because the spine is no longer square and sturdy, which really bothers me.

4 – Dog eared pages

I personally feel that there is no need to dog ear a page in a book. Just use a bookmark, and if you don’t have a bookmark, just use something close by, and if there’s nothing around that you can use, just make a note of the page number! There are so many bookmark stores online (INCLUDING MY OWN), why fold the corner of a page, effectively damaging the book, when there’s really no need to?

5 – Spoilers

I totally understand that if you’re excited about a book, you want to talk about it, but PLEASE try and do it spoiler free! I hate it when I’m reading a book, and I see a spoiler, it just ruins the book for me. If you are going to be posting a potential spoiler, PLEASE just add a spoiler alert so that people who haven’t yet finished a book can avoid it.
