Today is my stop on the blog tour for Hold Your Tongue by Deborah Masson, and I am excited to be sharing my review with you all.
A brutal murder.
A young woman’s body is discovered with horrifying injuries, a recent newspaper cutting pinned to her clothing.
A detective with everything to prove.
This is her only chance to redeem herself.
A serial killer with nothing to lose.
He’s waited years, and his reign of terror has only just begun…
On Detective Eve Hunter’s first Monday back at work following enforced leave, she is called to the scene of this gruesome crime. Hunter and her team spend the week chasing leads, until the following Tuesday, another body is discovered in similar circumstances.
Battling against a team who has lost respect for her and her own personal demons, Hunter must put herself inside the mind of a depraved killer if she is to prevent another terrible death…
From the very first chapter, Hold Your Tongue is horrifying, and brutal, and exactly what I was hoping for from this book! We are thrown straight in to the story with a flashback of an awful attack, and an opening that will have you hooked for the rest of the story. From that moment onwards this book just gets better and better.
DI Eve Hunter is an excellent protagonist. Her background story, and personal struggles are just as intense as the main story, and they make the entire book so much more interesting to read. I really enjoyed the gradual reveal of Eve’s past, and finding out what had happened to make her lose the respect of her team. I particularly liked how Masson didn’t make the team work in perfect harmony with one another, because in reality, that is never how things work, and it made the team seem more real. Every member of Eve’s team is explored a little, but still leaving for more in depth looks in to each character later in the series.
The crimes themselves were horrific, and very detailed. There were moments where the descriptions had me covered in goosebumps, and others where I felt completely sick, but for anyone who reads my blog regularly or knows me, you will know that this is exactly the type of book I love to read. There is a lot of blood, and some pretty disturbing descriptions, so if you’re a little squeamish, this may not be a good choice for you.
I was completely clueless as to who the murderer was until the very end, and I had so many suspicions along the way that turned out to be completely wrong. I certainly didn’t see the ending coming. This was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down until I had all of the answers. I finally got all of the answers in the form of a completely perfect and explosive ending, which certainly didn’t disappoint.
If I hadn’t been told, I would never have guessed that this was Deborah Masson’s debut! The story is even more chilling than that amazing cover, and a brilliant read. I can not wait to see what else is to come in the DI Eve Hunter series.
I give Hold Your Tongue a 5/5 rating!
About The Author:
Deborah Masson was born and bred in Aberdeen, Scotland. Always restless and fighting against being a responsible adult, she worked several jobs including secretarial, marketing, reporting for the city’s freebie newspaper and a stint as a postie – to name but a few.
Through it all, she always read crime fiction and, when motherhood finally settled her into being an adult (maybe even a responsible one) she turned her hand to writing what she loved. Deborah started with short stories and flash fiction whilst her daughter napped and, when she later welcomed her son into the world, she decided to challenge her writing further through online courses with Professional Writing Academy and Faber Academy. Her debut novel, Hold Your Tongue, is the result of those courses.
