Hey everyone!
Today’s post is something a little different.
Given JKR’s generally horrific behaviour, I know a lot of us don’t want to fund her in any way, and are also leaning against introducing our children to Harry Potter.
Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life for almost my whole life, and has gotten me through some of my darkest times, but I am really unsure about reading it to/with my daughter. I wouldn’t be funding JKR, because I already own all of the books from when I was a child, but I don’t want my daughter to fall in love with the series the way a lot of us have, because of JKR’s actions.
So, for those of you in the same position, I decided to make a list of books to introduce to your children instead of Harry Potter, and I thought it would be even better if I got a little help from the book community, so I asked book twitter to send in their suggestions. I had so many responses, with amazing suggestions, so I couldn’t use all of them, but I’ve tried to keep as many as I can on the list, and to also give a wide range of books to choose from.

I’ll start with one of my own suggestions… One of my favourite series as a child: Vampirates by Justin Somper.
I still love this series now!

One that got suggested quite a few times is the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

Another popular suggestion: the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend.

Not a specific book or series, but throughout my childhood, I absolutely loved Jacqueline Wilson’s books, and I know many others did too.
Her books were suggested by quite a few people on book twitter too: @elliesophie_, @mrsreadalot2017, @FilmFan06, @ParchmentPages

Another author who’s books were suggested was Beatrix Potter, which I definitely agree with. My fiancé and I often read her books to our daughter, and she loves them.

Another of my own suggestions is the A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket.

A popular suggestion was the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer.

The Pages & Co. series by Anna James was suggested by: @ReadToRamble and @biblio_fi

One that I am surprised was only suggested by one person is The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

I hope this post is helpful for all you parents out there, and for any of you who are searching for Harry Potter alternatives for yourself. I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave their suggestions.
Are there any that aren’t on this list which you would recommend?

So many of these books are on my TBR but Nevermoor has been my go-to recommendation for those who don’t want to read HP anymore! It’s such an amazing series and I feel like it deserves so much more love. I can’t wait to check out the others on this list 😀 Great post!

Great post! Even before JKR’s behaviour became more known, I think this would have been good – teach kids to like a variety of things rather than obsess over just one! 😍 I want to read the Percy Jackson books – am I too oldv

Great list! I personally also love the Gregor the Overlander series but Suzanne collins and it doesn’t get nearly enough hype in my opinion

I used to read all the Rainbow Fairy books when I was a kid! Probably a younger audience than Harry Potter and also more appealing to young girls than boys, but there’s hundreds of them for kids to get into, and they’re good for children to start reading to themselves ☺️
