Book Blurb:

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

My Review:

This was my first time reading anything by Carol Wyer, but I had heard so many good thinks about her books, so I was extremely excited to read An Eye For An Eye, and I can honestly say that it didn’t disappoint!

From the very beginning, this book has you hooked, and on the edge of your seat. It became apparent very early on that Kate was struggling with her mental health, and her mental state continues to become more and more concerning, but I feel like this brought so much more to the story.

The horrific incident that was the start of all of Kate’s mental struggles is explained a little piece at a time throughout the book in the form of flashbacks. These flashbacks are particularly heart-wrenching, and on multiple occasions I was very close to tears.

The murders themselves were gruesome, and brutal, but that’s exactly what I want from this type of book. I had multiple theories along the way as to who the killer was, and I actually did guess the killer and their motive with 100 pages left to read, but it didn’t ruin the rest of the book, because the investigation was so interesting, the book was still packed full of action, and waiting for the investigators to work it out was actually a lot of fun.

I love how the author pieced everything together, including the incident that caused Kate’s mental trauma. This is a great first book of a series, and the ending sets you up perfectly for another book in the series. I loved Kate and her little team, so I can not wait for the next book in the series, and to see how their story continues.

I give An Eye For An Eye a 4 star rating!

A huge thank you to Emma at Damppebbles, Carol Wyer, and Thomas & Mercer, for allowing me to be a part of this tour, for sending me a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, and for providing me with the content and materials for this post.
