First Lines Fridays – 21st May 2021

Hey everyone!

It is time for this week’s First Lines Fridays post!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

The first lines of today’s chosen book are:

Though the night is flush with stars, the sky still seems like a lid of earth closing atop a grave.
It’s a fate that could be mine, should anyone see me sneaking from my home at this hour – a fate reserved for criminals and traitors, rebels and liars.

And the book is…

Witches Steeped In Gold by Ciannon Smart

GoodReads Synopsis:

Divided by their order. United by their vengeance.

Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom – and vengeance.

Jazmyne is the Queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.

Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain – except the lengths they will go to win this game.

This Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut about two enemy witches who must enter into a deadly alliance to take down a common enemy has the twisted cat-and-mouse of Killing Eve with the richly imagined fantasy world of Furyborn and Ember in the Ashes.

I recently bought a copy of Witches Steeped In Gold after seeing it all over social media! This book sounds incredible, and a few friends and I have already planned to buddy read it in June. I can not wait!

Have you read this book?
If yes, what did you think of it?

Let me know in the comments!
