First Lines Fridays – 6th August 2021

Hey everyone!

It is time for this week’s First Lines Fridays post!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

The first lines of today’s chosen book are:

First-day-back assemblies are the most pointless practice ever.
And that’s saying a lot, seeing as Niveus Academy is a school that runs on pointlessness.

And the book is…

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

GoodReads Synopsis:

An incendiary and utterly compelling thriller with a shocking twist that delves deep into the heart of institutionalized racism, from an exceptional new YA voice.

Welcome to Niveus Private Academy, where money paves the hallways, and the students are never less than perfect. Until now. Because anonymous texter, Aces, is bringing two students’ dark secrets to light.

Talented musician Devon buries himself in rehearsals, but he can’t escape the spotlight when his private photos go public. Head girl Chiamaka isn’t afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power.

Someone is out to get them both. Someone who holds all the aces. And they’re planning much more than a high-school game…

I have heard so many amazing things about Ace of Spades, so I went and bought myself a copy. It is included in my August TBR/Trope-ical Readathon TBR, and I can’t wait to read it!

Have you read this book?
If yes, what did you think of it?
